- • All-purpose flour 500 g (3⅓ cups)
- • Milk (or plant-based alternative) 1 cup
- • Instant yeast 3 tbsp
- • Soft butter 1½ tbsp
- • Sugar (for dough) 2 tbsp
- • Salt (for dough) 1 tsp
- • Egg 1
- • Sugar (for boiling water) 2 tbsp
- • Salt (for boiling water) 1 tsp
- • Poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or grated cheese for topping
Method
- 1 Knead the flour, milk, yeast, butter, sugar, salt and egg into a dough for about 5 minutes by hand or in a food processor.
- 2 Rest the dough on a floured surface for 15-20 minutes.
- 3 Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces.
- 4 Roll each piece into a long rope, twist the rope, and connect the ends together to form a ring shape.
- 5 Place the formed rings on a floured surface.
- 6 Bring a wide pot of water to a boil with 2 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp salt.
- 7 Gently add the rings to the boiling water, 2-4 at a time depending on pot size, and cook about 1 minute per side until they rise.
- 8 Remove with a slotted spoon onto a parchment-lined baking tray and sprinkle with your chosen toppings.
- 9 Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F) and bake for about 15 minutes until glossy and golden.
